Football subdivisions[ edit ] Subdivisions in Division I exist only in football. The subdivisions were recently given names to reflect the differing levels of football play in them.

The season is partially associated with a recruiting scandal involving star freshman quarterback Ronnie Knox. Unfortunately it lost that game to Iowa 38 to One of the highlights of those years was Joe Kappwho is considered to be one of the greatest players in Cal history. Completely dedicated to his team and his university, he was able to push his teammates to perform beyond their limits as well as to fiercely intimidate his opponents.
Because there were no other stand out players on the team it is his fierce determination that is considered to be the reason for Cal playing in the Rose Bowl.
