Barcelona is framed by the Mediterranean to its east, situated in Catalunya (Catalonia) in Northeast Spain. Blessed with a pleasant climate all year round, in recent years it has emerged as a top European short break destination.

Since the climate of Barcelona is so favorable, the city prides itself on maintaining 68 municipal parks of varying sizes - of these, 6 are forest parks, 45 urban parks, 5 thematic or botanical parks, and 12 are historic parks. 10% of space in the city, or 549.7 hectares, are set aside for these parks, with around 10 hectares being added every year.

One of the main reasons for this is its spectacular architecture, a perfect example for this being the eccentric work of Antoni Gaudi, which can be enjoyed throughout the city. As well as countless other Gothic and Art Noveau buildings there are some excellent museums. Yet Barcelona also has much more to offer.

It is a considerable regional economic power, strategically close to the French border and with a far stretching Mediterranean coastline the Port de Barcelona is Spain’s most prosperous port and a major Mediterranean maritime destination. The epicenter of this flourishing city is at Placa de Catalunya from where you can walk along La Rambla southeast towards the port.

Another great feature of Barcelona are its seven beaches which occupy 4.5 kilometers of coastline all in all. The most popular among Barcelona’s beaches are the Barceloneta and the Sant Sebastia beaches, which are also the largest and oldest among the Barcelona beaches.Barcelona is made up of three districts namely Barri Gotic (Gothic Quarter), the Ribera and the Raval district.

This city has the unique advantage of being able to effortlessly combine its rich and ancient past as can be witnessed at the History Museum in Placa del Rei, with an array of avant-gard glass and steel buildings, an example being the World Trade Center. Last but not least the city houses the Camp Nou home to Barcelona FC, one of Europe’s greatest football teams!

Passeig de Gràcia is both one of the major avenues in Barcelona and also one of its most important shopping and business areas, containing a few of the city’s most celebrated pieces of architecture. It’s located in the central part of Eixample, stretching from Plaça Catalunya to Carrer Gran de Gràcia. Considering how much it cost to rent or buy a property throughout this avenue, Passeig de Gràcia is nowadays known as the most expensive street of Barcelona and also of Spain.

Formerly known as Camí de Jesús (“Jesus Road”), it used to be little more than a quasi-rural lane surrounded by gardens joining Barcelona and Gràcia (then still a separate town), until the first urbanisation project in 1821 devised by the liberal city council, and led by Ramon Plana, who had to suddenly cancel his work due to the epidemics that were raging in Barcelona at the time. After the demise of the liberal government with the return of Absolutism in 1824, the project was to be retaken by general José Bernaldo de Quirós, marquis of Campo Sagrado. The new avenue was 42 metres wide in 1827 and became a favourite place for aristocrats to display their horse riding skills and expensive horse-drawn carriages all through the 19th century.

In 1906 the architect Pere Falqués i Urpí designed the now famous ornated benches and street-lights of the avenue. By that time it had become Barcelona’s trendiest street, with buildings designed by modernista/Art Nouveau architects of fame such as Antoni Gaudí, Pere Falqués, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Enric Sagnier or Josep Vilaseca.

In 1934, founder Ramón Areces bought a tailor shop (which had opened in 1890) located on one of Madrid’s most central streets, calle Preciados, and made it into a limited company. In 1940 he turned the shop into the current corporation El Corte Inglés, S.A. Upon Areces’ death in 1989, his nephew Isidoro Álvarez was named his successor and quickly became one of the most powerful men in Spain. In 1995 El Corte Inglés bought out its only serious competitor, Galerías Preciados, which had entered bankruptcy.

El Corte Inglés is seen by the Spanish as a symbol of their culture. Many products and services in various local stores cater to the country’s diverse regions. Stores tend to be very large in size and offer a wide range of products: stores may sell music, movies, portable & household electronics, furniture, hardware, books, clothes and groceries.

This cafe/restaurant was a popular haunt for the young Picasso in the early 1900’s and here he undertook his very first commissioned work for designing the front cover of the menu.

The interior of the cafe was lit with antique chandeliers that gave the feeling of what it must have been like in an old Tavern back at the turn of the last century. Paintings filled much of the wall space and colourful multicoloured tiles decorated the central Bar. You can easily get the feeling of what it would have been like when Picasso used to spend his free time here.

That is true of Dong Lin but the good news is this Barcelona Chinese restaurant is only a 10 mins metro ride from the center of town on the Metro (Green Line, L3) Poble Sec. Another big advantage of this Barcelona Chinese restaurant are the prices. They are a fraction of those you would pay if you were to eat in the main tourist areas.

The interior of the restaurant is in the traditional chinese style - simple and spacious with tables big enough to accommodate large groups. If you like good Chinese food you won’t be disappointed by this little-known Barcelona Chinese restaurant. The food and service are first class.

The Euskal Etxea is a stylish Tapas bar in the heart of old Town Barcelona, only a few minutes walk away from the Picasso Museum. This bar serves excellent Pinchos (small rations of tasty food served on a small slice of bread) The word pinchos is Basque and similar to Tapas (Spanish). Pinchos is composed mainly of hams, cheeses or other meats or seafoods served on a slice of bread all held together by a cocktail stick. A single pinchos is called a “racion de pinchos” or just racion for short.

It’s a good idea to order a light refreshing drink that will clear the palette between raciones when you are pinchos dining. One such drink that fits the bill nicely is Txacoli (pronounced Chakolli) - a speciality white wine which is very distinctive for this region. The bar man serves Txacoli by pouring the wine from the bottle about 1 meter above the glass. This aerates the wine and helps to release the flavour. It’s best to stand a little further back when the barman is pouring Txacoli as sometimes his aim can be a little off.
